See for me

A 25 minute documentary charting the progress of three visually impaired people as they train with new guide dogs at the national training centre in Cork. The programme outlines how the dogs are bred and trained at the centre before being matched with new owners. For most visually impaired people, getting a guide dog is a life changing experience and this programme follows three trainees as they go through the highs and lows of the complex training process.

Derry Lawlor is a 35 year old civil servant from Dublin who was blinded 20 years ago by a brain tumour. Mairead O’Mahony is a 20 year old Computer Science student from Tralee who is blind from birth. Sean O’Connell from Cork was blinded several years ago by severe diabetes. They are all using a cane and find it difficult to get around. All three hope to gain a new lease of life with a new guide dog.

Obstacles which seem trivial to a sighted person can be dangerous and stressful to get around for the visually impaired. During the three week training course, Sean, Mairead and Derry deal with real hazards such as cars parked on pavements and building works. Surprisingly, the biggest problem visually impaired people face whilst training and when they return home is the threat of loose dogs who distract the guide dogs.
